Even if it is called the Deutschlandticket, you can also use the ticket to travel across the German border.

Which countries the ticket takes you to.

Already knew?

With the Deutschlandticket you can not only travel on public transport within Germany, but also abroad.

SÜDWEST24 reveals where you can go on vacation for just 49 euros.

Traveling internationally for 49 euros: Germany ticket is also valid abroad

In principle, you can use the Deutschlandticket to travel anywhere in Germany using local public transport (ÖPNV) from the individual network networks.

This means: ICE, IC, and EC are excluded from the ticket offer and you still need a ticket for these trains.

But can I travel abroad by train with the 49 euro ticket?

The answer is yes.

It is possible to travel abroad with the Deutschlandticket.

The validity of the ticket is not always based on geographical limits, but primarily on tariff limits.

And some of the German transport associations “protrude” into neighboring countries.

This means you can easily travel to some train stations abroad with the 49 euro ticket.

Here you can find a general overview with information about the Deutschlandticket.

Which destinations abroad can you reach with the Deutschlandticket?

According to Deutsche Bahn (DB), the Deutschlandticket is valid “throughout Germany on local transport and on all routes and to all train stations, which also include tickets from the Germany tariff and, in some cases, tickets from German transport associations and state tariffs.” This includes so-called community train stations, for example in these countries are:

  • Austria

  • Netherlands

  • Belgium

  • Switzerland

  • Poland

  • France

  • Denmark

  • Luxembourg

  • Czech Republic

Going abroad with the Germany ticket: This is how you get to Denmark

Since you can only travel on local transport with the Deutschlandticket, you should make sure that you are on the right network.

Let's start in the far north and slowly work our way around the Federal Republic.

My news

  • Baby happiness after the end of his career: Olympic ski champion becomes a father for the first time a few days after retirement

  • Bankruptcy of German industry giant: next traditional company goes bankrupt

  • “Technical problems” with the Leopard: Denmark points to Germany after bumpy Ukraine donation

  • Prisoner escapes while being treated at the clinic - and is caught two days later after being tipped off

  • Sweater, park bench, daffodils: The hidden messages in Princess Kate's video reading

  • “That’s disrespectful”: Civil servants earn as little as citizens’ benefit recipients – and the traffic lights are watching

With the Deutschlandticket you have the opportunity to travel all the way to Denmark.

A full five kilometers behind the German-Danish border in a small town called Tonder.

The most southwestern corner of Denmark, for example, can be reached from Hamburg by RE to Niebüll and from there by regional train (RB 66) in 20 minutes.

Take a trip to the Netherlands with the Deutschlandticket

Anyone who is in North Rhine-Westphalia can also take a detour to the Netherlands.

For this purpose, the tariff associations and associations travel from Dortmund main station to Enschede, Münster main station to Enschede and Bielefeld main station to Hengelo.

The Deutschlandticket is also valid on the Hamm-Venlo and Düsseldorf Hbf-Arnheim routes.

In conjunction with the Aachen transport company, it enables the use of bus connections to neighboring Dutch cities, for example Aachen-Vaals, Aachen-Kerkrade, and Aachen-Avantis commercial area.

There are also cross-border bus routes run by the Trier Region Transport Association, for example from Trier to St. Vith in Belgium.

With the Germany ticket to Belgium: difficult but doable

Traveling to Belgium with the Germany ticket is a little more difficult than to the other neighboring countries, but it is doable.

It is possible to travel to the city of Kelmis with some of the Aachener Verkehrsbetriebe (AVV) bus lines, which extend abroad.

Every traveler should inform themselves here before starting their journey.

The use of a cross-border AVV train line is not possible.

Travel-friendly Luxembourg: a destination with the Deutschlandticket

Luxembourg really means well to travelers and public transport users.

Since 2020, travel on all local public transport in Luxembourg has been free.

For example, it is quite possible to travel to the border, such as Wasserbillig, with the Deutschlandticket.

From there it continues to Luxembourg train station and to all tariff points in Luxembourg.

Visit France with the Germany ticket

If you would like to travel west and visit France, you can do so easily with the Deutschlandticket.

Options for traveling to the “Grande Nation” include, for example, from Mannheim to Wissembourg with a change in Neustadt (Weinstr) Hbf or directly Schweighofen/Palatinate–Wissembourg and Berg/Palatinate–Lauterbourg/Alsace.

From Neustadt (Weinstr) the route can be covered in 50 minutes, from Landau even in 30.

You can also take the Alsace and Wine Route Express excursion trains from Vlexx GmbH, which take you from Mainz or Koblenz to Wissembourg in France.

With the Germany ticket to the Rhine Falls in Switzerland

If you want to visit the Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen or go to Basel in Switzerland, you no longer have to struggle along the Swiss motorway.

Even with the Deutschlandticket you can sit comfortably on a train and be driven there.

For example, you drive from Freiburg to Schaffhausen.

The ticket is also valid on the cross-border routes from Weil am Rhein-Basel and on the SBB trains from Zell im Wiesental to Basel Bad.

From Freiburg the route only takes 45 minutes and from Offenburg it takes 1:45 minutes to Basel.

From Kreuzlingen the journey to Schaffhausen takes one hour.

Explore Austria with the Deutschlandticket

If you've always wanted to go to Salzburg, you can take public transport from Munich via Freilassing to Salzburg.

According to the Bavarian Regiobahn (BRB), passengers “are allowed to travel to Salzburg/Kufstein with the Deutschlandticket and the BRB”.

Important here:

According to Deutsche Bahn, the ticket is only valid for traffic to and from Germany and not for domestic Austrian traffic.

For just 49 euros with the Germany ticket to the Czech Republic

If you are currently in Saxony and want to travel to the Czech Republic, you can even drive as far as Hrádek nad Nisou.

Because with the Germany ticket for 49 euros per month, you don't have to pay extra on a trip with the Trilex.

The state railway Netinera announces: “The validity of the Germany ticket also includes areas of application of regional transport associations and state tariffs abroad.” Accordingly, you can use the ticket to take the cross-border line L7 to the Czech Republic.

Dare to travel to Poland with the Deutschlandticket

The 49 euro ticket allows you to travel with the Usedomer Bäderbahn from Züssow via the classic holiday destinations Heringsdorf and Ahlbeck to the final stop Swinemüde Zentrum in Poland.

The trains of the Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Association (VBB) also run to Poland.

Examples are the RB26 to Kostrzyn or the RB91 to Zielona Góra.

But be careful: travelers are only allowed to drive up to the border.

If you want to cross this, you have to buy a regular fare ticket from the last stop in the VBB area.

Where can't you go with the Deutschlandticket?

People who travel abroad with the 49 euro ticket should always remember that they cannot use all public transport in the destination countries with the Deutschlandticket, as they can in Germany.

Since the 49 euro ticket is only valid in cross-border train stations, a regional network ticket must also be purchased from these stations.

By the way: If you want to cancel your Deutschlandticket: here's how to do it.

The locations explained above are just a selection of the train stations that you can travel to with the Deutschlandticket.

Deutsche Bahn offers a list of all routes and destinations for which the Deutschlandticket is valid.
