It was in November 2008 that the first green bonds appeared, under the leadership of the World Bank.
Since then, a real market has developed, with an acceleration from 2015. In 2023, $575 billion in new green bonds have been issued, according to Bloomberg, which constitutes a new record.
But what are we talking about?
These are loans issued on the bond market, accompanied by a commitment from the issuer to use the money raised to finance projects with an environmental impact: renewable energies, sustainable resource management, energy efficiency, etc.
Under the aegis of the International Capital Markets Association, guidelines (the Green Bond Principles) have been issued, requiring issuers of green bonds to communicate environmental objectives to the market, to establish an annual report on projects financed or to use an independent expert to evaluate their approach.
