The development of artificial intelligence could threaten up to 8 million UK jobs in the future if measures are not introduced by the Government to avoid a jobs "apocalypse".
At risk there are different types of employment, low but also highly qualified, from secretarial work to data management to graphics, which could one day be replaced by algorithms, according to a study by the Institute for Public Policy Research (Ippr).
“Generative AI could lead to huge disruptions in the labor market,” said the report's editor, CarstenJung, but at the same time “stimulate economic growth.”
Analyzing 22,000 activities across all types of work, the think tank found that only 11% are currently at risk of being replaced by AI.
But the percentage can increase up to 59% in the so-called second wave of development of the new technology, when it will be able to manage increasingly complex processes.
The feared 'apocalypse', as stated in the same study, is however avoidable if government, businesses and unions intervene now to think of solutions aimed at protecting workers.
