Two boys, ages 12 and 15, drowned in the city of Corrientes this Tuesday while swimming in the
Paraná River
.
The Police are now investigating whether both of them jumped into the water to participate in
a challenge that had a thousand pesos as a prize
.
The incident occurred in a sector of natural beaches that is near the Santa Marta neighborhood of the provincial capital, where a group of boys were enjoying a relaxed afternoon on the river bank with a few adults.
Around 6:00 p.m.,
a bet
on minors would have arisen: a thousand pesos for the one who would swim first to a sandbank that was not far from the coast.
That version was collected by the Police while the Naval Prefecture carried out searches in search of the victims and now they are trying to determine the veracity and who launched the challenge.
There were several boys who jumped into the water and with arm strokes headed towards the sandbank, but two of them - the Corrientes Police did not reveal their identity - quickly
disappeared from the surface
.
Some people jumped into the water to try to rescue them, but their efforts were in vain.
Around 6:30 p.m., the mother of one of the victims was alerted to the incident.
It was the woman who notified the police of the tragedy, who landed on the beach with several patrol cars.
The Prefecture teams joined the search and around 7:40 p.m. they managed to find the two boys.
First aid was performed on the coast and they were taken to the Teaching Hospital, where doctors confirmed their deaths.
In that care center
there were some incidents between the victims' relatives and the police
when the death of both was confirmed.
At first, the version circulated that there was a third missing boy, but that information could never be corroborated by the Police.
There were also no complaints in the hours that followed, which is why the Prefecture ended the search in the river.
