Because of a calculation error, a car manufacturer has to pay customers an additional payment.

Those affected must take action themselves in order not to lose their claim.

Munich - The federal government's e-car funding was suddenly canceled at the end of 2023.

Anyone who submitted an application to BAFA (Federal Office of Economics and Export Control) for the environmental bonus by the deadline of December 17th is usually still entitled to the funding.

But the review of applications does not always go smoothly.

Car manufacturer Tesla makes mistakes when it comes to the manufacturer's share of e-car funding

Drivers who have leased a Tesla Model Y by the set deadline could currently receive mail from BAFA.

This could affect a lot of people in Germany, because according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, the Model Y was the best-selling battery-electric car in Germany in 2023 with around 45,800 registrations.

In the letter from BAFA, buyers are currently being informed about problems with the manufacturer's share of the environmental bonus.

The bonus consists of a manufacturer's share offset against the purchase price and the federal share to be applied for later.

In the letter from BAFA, Tesla customers are now informed of a calculation error: “After re-examining your application, we noticed that the manufacturer's own contribution to the environmental bonus (manufacturer's share) of 2,250.00 euros was not paid to you in full was passed on,” it says.

Tesla Model Y drivers should act now: environmental bonus could be at risk

In the BAFA letter, an individual invoice shows what amount the authority says is still outstanding from Tesla.

The outstanding amount varies: for some customers it is 500 euros, for others it is even 1000 euros.

Anyone who receives this letter should definitely take action.

The BAFA requires the requested information to be submitted in the BAFA upload area within two weeks.

If this does not happen, the application for e-car funding could be rejected and subsidies that have already been paid could be reclaimed.

According to information from

, Tesla is currently transferring the missing amount to customers without any problems.

  • You must then upload proof of the Tesla additional payment to the BAFA upload area (copy of the account statement).

Incidentally, the reason for abolishing the e-car subsidy was a lack of money: around 60 billion euros are missing from the climate and transformation fund, which is why savings had to be made at short notice in the 2024 federal budget.
