Vegan is healthy?
Not necessarily, as a study by Ökotest shows.
Many vegan butter alternatives contain questionable ingredients.
Munich – More and more people are opting for a plant-based diet, which is now also widespread in discounters and supermarkets.
Many of these stores offer their own vegan brands that are priced on par with animal products.
Aldi has even expanded its vegan range to over 1,000 products.
But despite the positive image, vegan does not necessarily mean healthier, as a current study by Ökotest shows.
When testing vegan butter alternatives, almost all products failed miserably.
Unlike margarine, vegan butter is supposed to be solid at room temperature.

Vegan does not mean healthy: Almost all butter alternatives fail the Ökotest test
Ökotest has tested nine vegan alternatives to butter.
In addition to the taste of the products, the focus was primarily on the ingredients.
The result of Ökotest was shocking - at least traces of mineral oil were found in eight of the nine butter alternatives.
As expected, seven products therefore failed.
A disappointing result, even the best rated products can hardly be called winners.
But at least these two products received a “sufficient” rating:
Organic Vegan Block – Landkrone
Organic Vegan Block – Naturli'
However, the situation is different with “Die Vegane” from the manufacturer Meggle, “Vioblock” from Violife and “My Veggie No B:)tter” from Edeka.
According to Ökotest, the latter was even taken out of sale
Vegan butter alternatives: No better than classic butter - but what's the difference?
But questionable ingredients were not only found in the vegan alternatives to butter; mineral oils were also discovered during an examination of conventional butter.
So what is the difference between butter, its vegan alternative and margarine?
Butter is always made from cream or cream and is therefore always an animal product.
Some consumers may think that vegan butter is simply margarine.
However, margarine can contain up to three percent milk fat and is therefore not necessarily vegan.
Although many people consider them to be healthier, mineral oil has even been found in margarine.
Another important difference is that vegan butter must consist of fats that are solid at room temperature, while margarine is often made of fats that are liquid at room temperature, according to Ökotest.
Therefore the composition of the products differs.
Ökotest tests a large number of products and there are always surprising negative reviews, such as organic spaghetti, which recently disappointed Ökotest.
