When temperatures rise, the tires need to be changed again.
When do I have to change from winter to summer tires?
A rule of thumb helps.
If you own a car and don't use all-season tires, you have to change your tires according to the season.
This procedure is strenuous, dirty and annoying for many - but necessary for safe travel on the roads.
When changing tires, it is important to wait for the right time.
SÜDWEST24 explains a well-known rule of thumb on this problem.
Why do I have to change car tires?
Different car tires are required for the different extreme seasons, summer and winter.
The reason for this lies in three main points: the temperatures, the weather conditions and the road conditions at the respective times of the year.
As a rule, slippery roads occur at temperatures below zero degrees and lower.
Sometimes even at temperatures below four degrees.
At such low temperatures, winter tires are the better choice.
They are made of a special rubber compound that remains soft and flexible even in cold conditions.
In winter the car also tends to get damp inside, but there is a trick to combat this.
Summer tires are far inferior to winter tires at low temperatures, as they lose their flexibility and therefore their advantages below seven degrees.
The summer tires shine with their strengths, especially on dry and wet roads.
From 7 degrees Celsius, the tires enable shorter braking distances and greater safety in the wet in the summer.
For these reasons, it is strongly advised not to use the respective tires all year round.
When should you change tires?
There is a well-known rule of thumb for seasonal tire changes for everyone who cannot or does not want to remember data.
This simply goes from O to O. This means that you should have summer tires on your car from Easter to October and winter tires from October to Easter.
In Germany, snow, sleet and slippery frost are always to be expected between October and Easter, so driving with winter tires is better at this time.
However, you shouldn't necessarily rely on this rule of thumb.
Finally, unlike Christmas, Easter does not always fall on the same day.
Since the date of Easter is always the first Sunday after the first full moon in spring, Easter takes place either in March, but sometimes not until the second half of April.
Depending on how early the date is, there is a higher probability that there will be slippery conditions even after Easter.

What are a good alternative to seasonal tires?
For this reason, you can pay attention to the temperatures without any rule of thumb.
If the thermometer consistently shows a number of degrees above seven degrees Celsius, you can safely change the tires from winter to summer tires.
If in doubt, you should always leave the winter tires on for a little longer.
If you want to save yourself the hassle of changing tires seasonally, you should use all-season tires instead.
These can be used for all weather conditions.
After all, they offer sufficient safety, especially for smaller, light cars, even if they cannot match the performance of the respective specialists in different weather conditions.
Along with the right time to change tires, it is also important to know when the time change takes place.
