At Easter, the ban on dancing is not the only ban there is. Around 700 films are banned on Good Friday because they offend “moral sensibilities”.

Anyone who likes to use the long weekend at Easter to switch off with exciting films in addition to the highest Christian festival could run into a problem on Good Friday. Over 700 films are not allowed to be shown publicly on the “silent holiday”, as HEIDELBERG24 reports. An overview of the films banned on the Easter holiday:

At Easter – Hundreds of films on the list of films banned on Good Friday

Other long weekends might be used for a bit more partying, but not necessarily at Easter. With Good Friday, dancing is banned on the first holiday of the Easter weekend. But if you plan to have a good time with a bag of popcorn and a classic film, you could also be disappointed.

Because Good Friday as a “quiet holiday” not only comes with a ban on dancing, but also with some restrictions on what can be shown publicly. In addition to Good Friday, All Saints' Day, Day of Repentance and Prayer, Day of Remembrance and Sunday of the Dead are also considered silent holidays. What else is customary at Easter, from the Easter bunny to the colorful eggs, and where the traditions come from.

“Violation of moral sensibilities”: At Easter – list shows films banned on Good Friday

A committee from the Voluntary Self-Regulation of the Film Industry (FSK) decides whether a film receives approval. Whether a film can be shown on quiet holidays depends entirely on whether it contradicts the character of a quiet holiday like Good Friday so much that “there is a risk of offending religious and moral sensibilities.”

More than 700 films are on the blacklist in total. According to the above explanation, it is quite understandable that some films are not allowed to be shown on Good Friday. When it comes to other decisions made by the committee, one can only scratch one's head. The long list includes porn under animated films for children and comic comedies under horror films. Some of the films featured on the holiday index:

  • Monty Python – The Life of Brian

  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show

  • The Feuerzangenbowle

  • Conan the Barbarian

  • Police Academy... Dumber than the police allow

  • Ghostbusters – The ghost hunters

  • Mad Max

  • Mary Poppins

  • Scream

  • A Hard Day's Night

  • Heidi in the mountains

  • Jackass: The Movie

  • 28 Days Later

  • Crank 2: High Voltage

Films banned at Easter – these titles are not allowed to be shown on Good Friday

In addition to numerous horror films from “Dance of the Devils” to “28 Days Later”, there are also a number of Bruce Lee films. Between erotic films there are suddenly “Heidi in the Mountains”, “Mary Poppins” and the Beatles mockumentary “A Hard Day's Night”. The mixed selection is completed by comedies like “Police Academy” and “Ghostbusters” and action classics like “Top Gun” or “Mad Max”.

There is still a ray of hope for fans of films that “offend moral religious sensibilities”. The indexing only applies to public screenings. You can also watch the films on Good Friday in your private room on DVD, via streaming services and on TV. You won't be able to see the films in cinemas or other public screenings.

Forbidden Easter classic – why you can watch “The Life of Brian” after all

And contrary to the FSK's decision, "Monty Pythons - The Life of Brian" has become a true Easter classic over the years that cannot be missed on the television program. Although not on Good Friday, it can also be seen on television this year.

In addition to seeing certain films in the cinema, there are of course other things that are not possible at Easter. The shops are closed for three days over the Easter weekend. We'll tell you here when you can go shopping around Easter despite the changed opening times in supermarkets like Aldi, Lidl and Co. (paw)
