What rules must be followed on the long-distance bus to ensure the safety of passengers? All information is available here at a glance.

Leipzig – On the way to Switzerland, a Flixbus had an accident on the A9 near Leipzig on Wednesday morning (March 27, 2024). For reasons that are still unclear, the long-distance bus left the road and fell to the side. According to initial information from the police, other vehicles were said to have been involved. At least four people died in the accident (as of March 27, 6 p.m.). The reporting sparked a broad debate about travel safety.

After a serious Flixbus accident: This is something to keep in mind when traveling on a long-distance bus

Flixbus emphasizes that the long-distance bus is the safest means of transport on the road and refers to a report by the Federal Statistical Office. TÜV confirms the statement in a press release: “Travel, intercity and regular buses are among the safest vehicles.” However, drivers and passengers must follow certain rules.

The current focus is on the question of whether passengers on long-distance buses have to buckle up. Flixbus explains on its website that there is an obligation to wear a seat belt, which both passengers and drivers must adhere to. According to Flixbus, the safety of passengers and drivers is the top priority. The transport company asks that you keep your seatbelt fastened during the journey. In addition, children and babies must be equipped with a child seat for “age-appropriate transport”.

For more safety: According to Flixbus, bus drivers have to take turns

The bus drivers are also optimally prepared for all road traffic situations in “regular safety training,” says Flixbus. To do this, they must adhere to legally regulated driving and rest times, which can be tracked using GPS tracking. Compliance with breaks is checked “by internal and external authorities”.

As a rule, two drivers are used in a long-distance bus, who can take turns, as was the case with the accident on line 234. According to police, the person who was behind the wheel at the time of the accident is not among the fatalities. Details about the bus driver's health have not yet been provided (as of March 27, 2024).
