This isn't the first time Duffy has resurfaced on social media after a long absence. The last one lasted ten years and the British singer returned with sad and shocking explanations. This time the news seems more positive. On Instagram, the interpreter of

reposted a video from the @thephilosophart account. “A little something to motivate the heart,” she wrote in the caption of her publication. I hope that you all are ok. Lots of love, Duffy.”

The video presents animated drawings which follow one another over a voice-over similar to that of old films or archive images. “You will realize that happiness has never been linked to your job, your diploma or being in a relationship,” she says. Happiness has never been about following in the footsteps of everyone who came before you. It was never about being like everyone else. One day you will see." The clip continues by defining what happiness truly would be: “it’s always discovery, hope, listening to your heart and following it wherever it decides to go.” We then wonder if the words that follow echo the journey that Duffy has been pursuing in recent years. “Happiness has always been about being kinder to yourself,” the voiceover says again. It's always been about embracing the person you're becoming. One day you will understand that happiness has always been about learning to live with yourself, that your happiness has never been in the hands of others. One day you will understand that true happiness comes from within and that no external factor can define it. It was always about you. It’s always about you.”
Ten years of silence
It is indeed difficult not to think that the remarks made in this video echo the terrible events that Duffy recounted 4 years ago. On February 25, 2020, after 10 years during which her fans had barely heard from her, the singer reappeared on Instagram. In a post that she has since deleted, she gave the reasons for her long silence. “I was raped, drugged, and held captive for several days. Of course, I survived. Recovery took time. There is no light way to say this. But I can tell you that over the last decade, after spending thousands and thousands of days making sure I felt the sun light up my heart again, it is now shining.”
The Welshwoman then reiterated and detailed these remarks to the
BBC
. “Rape is like experiencing murder: you are alive and dead at the same time,” she told the British newspaper. She also told how this kidnapping had taken place and the weeks of horror she had experienced. “It was my birthday, I was drugged in a restaurant,” she remembered. I was then drugged for four weeks and traveled to a foreign country. I don't remember getting on the plane and finding myself in the back of a vehicle. I was locked in a hotel room and the attacker came back and raped me.” It was after being contacted by a journalist that Duffy decided to break her silence: “He found a way to contact me and I told him everything last summer. He was nice, and it was great to finally talk,” she said. Since then the singer had not said anything, until this recent publication imbued with optimism.
