If the temperatures get warmer, hobby gardeners should take care of the local greenery. With these tips you are well prepared for a healthy lawn in spring.

A green and evenly growing lawn is a joy for gardeners. A strong green offers space for games and sociable days in the sun. However, the grass needs a little care, especially in spring: so that the lawn can really come into its own in the spring months, gardening enthusiasts should make a few preparations now.

Winter does not leave even the strongest lawn unscathed. It is not uncommon for brownish spots, bare areas and moss to spoil the appearance of the lawn after the cold and wet months. Spring is therefore the right time for mowing, fertilizing and sowing. The lawn grows and thrives best at soil temperatures of around ten degrees.

As the weather slowly warms up, gardening enthusiasts can prepare the lawn for the first mowing. To do this, the lawn must first be cleared of leaves and branches. Only then can the grass be mown. To get a good overview of the condition of the lawn, the lawn mower should be set to the lowest setting. It is important that the lawn mower blades are sharp enough. This is the only way the lawn can actually be cut.

Spring lawn care: 2. Remove moss

After mowing, gardeners should check the grass for brown spots and moss growth. Especially in shady areas, the lawn is often full of weeds and moss. While weeds can usually be removed by hand, a hand scarifier or an iron rake can help with moss areas. Once the moss has been removed, the soil will now be sufficiently ventilated again.

Lawn care in spring: 3. Treat acidic soil areas with lime

In order for the lawn to better absorb nutrients and thrive, gardeners should check the pH of the soil before fertilizing. The value can be easily determined with a quick test from the hardware store. The optimal pH value is between 5.5 and 6.5. If it is lower, the soil is considered acidic. Basically, sandy soil can tolerate a slightly lower pH value, while loamy soil can tolerate a slightly higher pH value. To raise the pH value, the soil can be treated with a little lime.

Well-kept lawn in spring: 4. Sow new grass

Bare or thinned areas must be reseeded. Special lawn seed mixtures are best suited for this. In order for the lawn to develop well, the outside temperature should be around ten degrees. This means the lawn seeds have the best conditions to grow back in spring.

Well-kept lawn in spring: 5. Fertilize the grass properly

To support the growth of the lawn, hobby gardeners can spread a thin layer of finely sifted compost. The natural fertilizer stimulates soil activity and also protects the freshly sown lawn seeds from being eaten by birds. A little fertilizer can help to make the grass particularly thick and green. This can eliminate the nutrient deficiency.
