The next time you change your tires, take a close look at your winter tires. They may need to be thrown away. A new rule will apply from autumn 2024.

Hamm - Given the spring-like temperatures that coincide with the beginning of spring in Germany, one can hardly speak of a real winter. But be careful: in the past there have been repeated outbreaks of winter in March, and this cannot be ruled out in 2024 either. It is not for nothing that the rule of thumb “O to O” applies to driving with winter tires – from October to Easter.

New rule: Why many drivers will soon have to throw away their winter tires

If you are switching to summer tires soon, you should pay close attention to the symbols on the winter tires when changing tires and not just put them in the basement or have them stored in the workshop. Because of a change in the rules, there is a risk of a nasty surprise in a few months. Anyone who uses the wrong winter tires from October 2024 risks a hefty fine and a point in Flensburg.

Drivers will have to prepare for many changes in 2024, most of which will affect newly registered cars. However, one innovation applies to all models, including older ones. Many tires that have served and are still serving well in the winter of 2023/24 are no longer permitted and should be disposed of immediately after switching to summer tires.

For a long time, tires that were suitable for winter conditions could also be identified by the M+S symbol - M+S for “Mud and snow”. In 2018, the new Alpine symbol, showing a three-pointed mountain with a snowflake, was introduced for the labeling of winter and all-season tires. Tires with the M+S logo were still permitted, but this period now ends.

In 2024, only winter tires with Alpine markings will be permitted

From October 2024, car tires must bear the Alpine symbol in order to be considered suitable for winter. Tires that

only

have an M+S marking no longer do this. Anyone who still drives such models should exchange them for new ones before winter 2024/25. That would probably make sense anyway, because tires with only an “M+S” on them have been out of production for a long time and should no longer be used simply because of their age. Important: If the tires have the M+S marking, but also the Alpine symbol, everything is fine. They are still allowed.

If a driver does not adhere to the new tire regulations, they face a fine of 60 euros. If other road users are obstructed, the fine increases to 80 euros. In both cases, a point is added to the traffic offenders file in Flensburg. Owners who allow or order trips in winter conditions must expect a fine of 75 euros and also one point.
