The Flixbus accident sparked a debate about traffic safety. The transport company has set some rules.

Leipzig – A serious accident occurred on the A9 near Leipzig on Wednesday morning (March 27, 2024). A Flixbus left the road for reasons that are still unclear. According to police, other vehicles were said to have been involved. At least four people were killed and numerous others were injured. The long-distance bus was on the way to Switzerland.

In the course of the reporting, a debate about travel safety spread. Flixbus emphasizes on its website that the long-distance bus is the safest means of transport on the road. This was also confirmed by the Federal Statistical Office and TÜV. Flixbus also explains its rules, which both drivers and passengers must adhere to.

After a serious Flixbus accident: This applies when traveling by long-distance bus

According to the transport company, the safety of passengers and the drivers deployed is their top priority. “You too can do your part to ensure safe bus travel,” Flixbus continues. Accordingly, you are required to wear a seat belt on long-distance buses. However, this is not a three-point belt like in a car, but rather a waist belt.

In addition, children and babies must be equipped with a suitable child seat for “age-appropriate transport”. Flixbus asks its passengers to check that they and their child are wearing seatbelts at all times while traveling on the long-distance bus. This is the only way to guarantee the promised safety when traveling.

Flixbus long-distance buses are equipped with lane keeping and emergency braking assistants

Flixbus also points out that its long-distance buses are “equipped with the latest assistance systems”, including ESP, emergency braking and lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, light sensors and clearance lights. They are checked at regular intervals by specially trained employees and receive “external support from TÜV SÜD Auto Plus”.

Bus drivers are also subject to regular checks “by internal and external authorities”. Because they have to adhere to clearly regulated driving and rest breaks, which can be tracked using GPS tracking. In order to adhere to the breaks, two drivers are usually used.
