End clap for the children's newspaper (JDE): after 40 years of existence, the last issue of this weekly news aimed at 8 - 14 year olds was published this Thursday, the publication not resisting the significant drop in number of readers. From 150,000 subscribers in 1993, the newspaper increased to barely 7,000 in 2024. Revenues, too low, led Crédit Mutuel, owner of the Ebra group of which the JDE is a part, to end publication of the newspaper.
“Today, I feel anger and sadness
,” Caroline Gaerter, editorial manager of the JDE, who worked there for more than 18 years, told AFP.
“What’s really hard is that it’s a complete disappearance
,” she stressed, very moved. Because in addition to the end of print distribution, the newspaper's website will no longer be accessible from Wednesday.
Sold by subscription, the JDE was distributed both to families and to schools.
“We don't know how young people will get information in 10 years, but I remain convinced that media education is essential
,” added Caroline Gaerter.
“We received more than 200 testimonials from people, parents today, who thanked us for introducing them to the news
,” said the journalist.
