RIO DE JANEIRO - "Due to over 3.5 million infections and at least a thousand deaths, the American continent is set to record the worst dengue fever epidemic in history in 2024", concentrating 80% of the world's cases. This was reported by the Pan American Health Organization (Paho), highlighting that in the first three months of the year, cases increased, reaching a number three times higher than that recorded in the same period of 2023.
In the report published today, Paho highlights that the incidence of the disease increased by 249% compared to last year and by 354% compared to the average of the last 5 years. Cases of dengue fever have been reported in 18 countries on the continent, but Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay are by far the most affected countries. In Brazil, in particular, as of March 27, there were 2,323,150 confirmed cases, equal to an incidence of 1,144 cases per one hundred thousand inhabitants.
At least 830 deaths. In Paraguay the number of dengue cases registered so far this year is 23 times higher than that recorded in the same period last year, going from around 6,900 thousand infections in 2023 to 160,900 in 2024. In the same comparison, Argentina saw a jump from 8,300 to 102,800 cases. In the two countries, 43 and 69 deaths from the disease were recorded respectively.
