From mid-March or April 1st to mid-July, dogs must be on a leash. And almost everywhere. If you ignore this, you may have to pay a lot of money.
It is understandable that a dog is not allowed to run around as he pleases in a crowded pedestrian zone. However, some dog owners will be surprised that from mid-March or April 1st, going outdoors in the field or in the forest will be prohibited in their federal state. This has to do with the so-called breeding and breeding season of other animals, which are particularly protected during this time.

Breeding and setting time: Some animals need rest now

If a dog wanders through the forest or across the field, it is not uncommon for his sensitive nose to sniff out another animal. Hunting dogs in particular have a strong urge to follow the scent and flush out rabbits, deer or other forest dwellers. However, this is strictly forbidden between April 1st and July 15th, as many of the forest and field dwellers raise their offspring and need protection and peace. Pregnant mothers find it difficult to escape from a dog and would die. Therefore, there is a strict leash requirement almost everywhere in the open countryside.
Each federal state has its own rules
Which one applies to you and your dog depends on where you live. The leash requirement does not necessarily exist in every federal state. However, where the obligation applies, it is strictly controlled. In the event of a violation, a high fine can be expected. This can vary depending on the circumstances. The fines for ignoring the leash requirement vary greatly depending on the location, but in extreme cases can be up to 5,000 euros. If animals are proven to be harmed by a dog, the amount for the owner increases even further.
