Lifestyle affects the risk of cancer. Due to certain causes, cancer diagnoses are expected to increase in the next few decades.
According to information from the Federal Statistical Office
, cancer is
still the second most common cause of death in Germany - after cardiovascular diseases. Although research continues to provide new insights into cancer, its causes and possible therapeutic approaches, the number of cancer cases continues to rise worldwide, according to the
International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)
. The
World Health Organization (WHO)
expects
a rapid increase of 77 percent by 2050.

20 million new cancer diagnoses were made in 2022. According to
WHO
forecasts,
this number is expected to increase to 35 million annually by 2050, as
Tagesschau Online
reports. One in five people worldwide will develop cancer in their lifetime and one in twelve women and one in nine men will die from it. According to the IARC, population growth and the fact that people are getting older and living longer are responsible for this. But lifestyle changes also increase the individual risk of cancer. The following four risk factors play a crucial role:
Smoke
Alcohol consumption
Overweight or obesity
High air pollution

Colon cancer: Deaths among younger people are increasing
In addition to a lack of exercise, being overweight and drinking alcohol are also important risk factors for colon cancer. According to the results of a study by researchers at the University of Milan published in the journal
Annals of Oncology,
more and more young people (aged 25 to 49) are developing this type of cancer in some European countries. According to the research team's forecast, there is also a sharp increase in the death rate from colon cancer in this age range, as
Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR)
reports. The increase rates among young people in some countries are worrying, says study leader and epidemiologist Carlo La Vecchia, especially because the diagnosis and treatment of colon cancer have improved.
