Blueberries can be easily planted in beds or containers. The right soil plays a crucial role in cultivation.

Blueberries can be divided into two varieties: the native wild blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) and the cultivated cultivated blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum), which comes from North American species. What the ancient Romans already knew has been confirmed by today's research: blueberries have an anti-inflammatory effect. Our local specimens from the forest have significantly more vitamins and minerals than their American relatives. However, the cultivated blueberries have a more intense taste and bear significantly more fruit.

Planting blueberries: The right soil is important

You can plant the blueberry bushes both in the bed and in the pot. It is important that you use the right soil. Blueberries feel particularly comfortable in sandy, boggy and acidic soil. A pH value of 3.5 to 4 is optimal for the plants to grow and thrive. When growing it is therefore best to use special soil for strawberries or rhododendrons.

Blueberries prefer a sunny location. If you plant two different species together, you will significantly increase your crop yield. It is also important that you do not plant your blueberry bushes too deep in the ground. The plants belong to the shallow-rooted species. This means: The hole can only be so deep that the top edge of the root ball protrudes one to two fingers wide from the soil.

How to care for your blueberry bushes

Blueberries are very easy to care for. You do not need to trim the bushes for the first five years. If you break out the flowers in the first year, you won't be able to harvest any berries - but the plant will grow better. The bushes absolutely cannot tolerate lime. As soon as the lime content in the soil increases slightly, blueberries turn yellow leaves and stop growing. Therefore, only water the plants with low-lime water. Rainwater is well suited for this. You can easily collect this, for example, in a rain barrel (promotional link).
