Ten sturdy ground cover plants that can take a lot of punishment

2024-03-29T04:45:10.518Z

Highlights: Ten sturdy ground cover plants that can take a lot of punishment. The creeping carpet verbena (Phyla nodiflora) tolerates both heat and moisture and is very hard-wearing. The blue bobhead (Isotoma fluviatilis) not only blooms for months until autumn, the densely growing perennial can also be walked on. You shouldn't jump around wildly on the Spanish stonecrop (Sedum hispanicum), but you can walk on the typical green roof without any problems.

Is the lawn too bland or in need of care? Instead, there are durable alternatives that don't need to be mowed and are still walkable.

Whether as an underplant, between stone tiles as a gap filler or as a lawn replacement - low-growing and hard-wearing ground cover plants are easy to care for and, with their flowers, are often a valuable natural enrichment for the garden. If you choose winter-hardy varieties, you won't have to worry about dense carpets of plants next year. Especially since the perennials spread quickly without any further action.

Even if they produce flowers, you don't have to be afraid to enter the area. The small flowers are present in such large numbers and the growth is so robust that the plants can withstand at least temporary stress. Only those who walk barefoot should look around for insects that like to visit the flowers.
