Daylight saving time 2024 is upon us and the clocks are moving forward. Will it be light outside sooner or later due to the time change in March?
Hamm - again every six months. The clocks are changed twice a year. In addition to the question of whether it has to be set one hour forward or one hour back, there is at least one more thing in this context: Will it be light earlier or later in the morning after the time change?
Summer time 2024: Will it be light sooner or later after the time change?
But first let us note: Summer time 2024 begins on the last weekend in March. In concrete terms, this means: On the night of Sunday, March 31st - which is also Easter Sunday this year - the clocks will be set forward one hour. From 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. So we are “leaving” winter time, which is considered normal or standard time.
The still controversial time change was introduced in 1973 to save energy. Nevertheless: First of all, it gets light later in the morning in summer time, but it stays light longer in the evening. The longer daylight lasts is intended to reduce electricity consumption - that's the idea behind it.
But in reality, this measure hardly saves consumers any energy. “The change leads to lower consumption in one place and higher consumption in another,” was the verdict of the Federal Environment Agency.
Summer time saves electricity - but winter time makes up for it
Switching to summer time would actually save electricity for lighting due to daylight brightness. But: “At the same time, getting up earlier in the cooler morning hours results in an increased consumption of heating energy in spring and autumn,” it continues.

The authority also mentioned further effects: “The longer daylight hours in the evening can lead to changes in leisure behavior and be associated with increased consumption in transport and in leisure facilities.”
No matter whether it is spring or autumn: people always ask themselves whether the clock should be set forward or back. The following mnemonics can help:
In the spring you put the garden furniture
outside
the door and in the fall
you put it back
in the shed.
In summer the temperatures go
up
(from 2 to 3 o'clock), in winter the temperatures go
down
(from 3 to 2 o'clock) and fall.
Spring forward, fall back (in spring you set the clocks forward, in winter you set them back).
