Night of severe bad weather throughout the province of Varese with firefighters engaged in dozens of interventions. The most serious emergency was recorded in Via Rovera in Gavirate (Varese) where a chasm opened during the night due to the collapse of the road surface, five meters wide and six meters deep. The sinkhole opened about two meters away from a house. Elderly parents and daughter who live in the house were evacuated as a precaution and found shelter in the parish house.

Heavy snowfall at high altitude in the Venetian Dolomites
The wave of bad weather yesterday evening and last night which also affected the mountains of Veneto, brought further snowfall to the high altitude locations in the Dolomites, above 1800-1900 metres. The greatest quantity of new snow was recorded in Re Vales, above Cortina d'Ampezzo (Belluno) with 33 centimeters, while 10 centimeters fell in Monte Piana di Misurina. Again in the Belluno area, accumulations above 10 centimeters were also recorded in Cima Pradazzo, on Monte Cherz and the peaks above Arabba. Throughout the mountain area of the province of Belluno the quantity on the ground remains high with a maximum of almost 3 meters in Ra Valles. However, it rained in the Belluno and Veronese Prealps, as well as on the Asiago Plateau, where however the snowfall remained consistent. On Monte Baldo (Verona) 145 centimeters were recorded, while in the Seven Municipalities the record belongs to Cima XII with almost one and a half metres.
Orange alert in Lombardy
The Civil Protection has issued a warning of adverse weather conditions which foresees the persistence of scattered to widespread precipitation, including downpours or thunderstorms, from today's morning, Sunday 31 March, in Valle d'Aosta, Piedmont and Lombardy, extending to Liguria and in the afternoon Veneto.
"These phenomena will be accompanied by heavy showers, frequent electrical activity, possible hailstorms and strong gusts of wind", warns the Civil Protection.

Avalanche and flooding in Piedmont
Heavy rainfall affected north-eastern Piedmont and in particular the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola during the evening. An avalanche broke out in the Iselle area (Vco); flooding was reported in Villadossola. A hailstorm hit in Valsesia (province of Vercelli). Over the course of the day, the intrusion of Sahara sand colored the snows of the Alps and also portions of the sky with a color between yellowish and orange in some areas; the phenomenon was also noticed in Turin.
