From April 2024, a number of new laws will come into force, including the mobility subsidy for trainees. The Federal Employment Agency covers the costs.
Munich – Not only does the controversial cannabis law come into force on April 1, 2024, there are also numerous other changes that German citizens will face. In addition to the new regulation for births from April 1st and the associated income limit for parental allowance, there is also the mobility allowance for trainees.
The mobility grant is part of a broader concept to promote the training guarantee. It is intended to help young people who are starting their training outside of their usual commute and therefore have to move. Applications can be made both online and in the job center. But the law sets clear requirements for eligibility for the mobility subsidy.

The conditions of the mobility grant from the employment agency
The conditions for the subsidy are clear: the training center must not be reachable within a reasonable time from the trainee's current place of residence. As a result, a change of residence is necessary in order to be able to begin the training. This means that the grant covers “two monthly family trips home per month”

It literally says in §63
:
The travel costs are based on the amount that has to be paid when using the most convenient regular public transport in the lowest class; When using other means of transport, travel costs are based on the amount of travel compensation in accordance with Section 5 Paragraph 1 of the Federal Travel Expenses Act. In the case of non-minor fare increases, an adjustment must be made upon request if the approval period continues for at least two more months. 3Costs for commuting trips are only taken into account up to the amount that can be paid in total according to §86.

The mobility subsidy for trainees is part of the law to strengthen training and further education funding (AWBG), which will come into effect on April 1, 2024. The new regulations that come into force include the reform of further training funding, the introduction of a qualification allowance and the training guarantee. The aim of the training guarantee is to give all young people without a vocational qualification access to fully qualified training.
It consists of various elements such as advice and support offers, internships for career orientation, the aforementioned mobility grant and adjustments to entry-level qualifications. The latter can be completed part-time from April 1st; the minimum duration will be shortened from six to four months. In addition, from August 1, 2024, those eligible for funding will have a legal right to external vocational training if they come from regions with a significant shortage of training places. (
