Cannabis legalization is coming. With the new law, smoking weed is permitted from April 1st under certain conditions. The Bubatz map shows where it is forbidden.

Hamm – Smoking weed will be legal in Germany from April 1st. After a long struggle, the law to partially legalize cannabis was finally passed. But in the future too, you won't be able to just light up a joint and enjoy the weed. There are clear regulations as to where and when marijuana can be smoked. The so-called Bubatz card can help, reports wa.de.

25 grams of cannabis allowed for personal consumption

In the future, it will be permitted to possess up to 25 grams of cannabis for personal consumption - this amount can then also be carried in public spaces. Stoners can store up to 50 grams in their apartment. You can even grow three plants at the same time - but they would yield a lot more. According to the law, this surplus would then have to be destroyed immediately after the harvest.

This harvest, in turn, is only permitted for personal consumption. Passing it on to others is prohibited. In addition, seeds, plants and harvested cannabis must be protected against theft and access by children - for example with lockable cupboards and rooms.

It is clearly regulated where people will smoke weed from April 1st

Despite cannabis legalization, there are many requirements that must be observed. One of the most important ones is that consumption, i.e. smoking weed itself, is not permitted everywhere:

  • Consumption “in the immediate presence” of people under 18 is prohibited.

  • In pedestrian zones, marijuana consumption is prohibited from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., i.e. permitted from 8:01 p.m. to 6:59 a.m.

  • Smoking weed is prohibited in playgrounds, schools, sports facilities, children's and youth facilities and within sight of them - i.e. within 100 meters as the crow flies of the entrance area.

The last point in particular is likely to raise a lot of questions; after all, no stoner is going to walk around with a 100-meter tape measure in their pocket. So how do you keep the right distance from playgrounds and other places? This is where the Bubatz card comes into play.

Bubatz map shows where cannabis can be smoked

This is publicly available on the Internet and shows red areas on a map in which smoking weed is and remains prohibited. Attention: The map may be incorrect. “Visibility” is always important. If in doubt, stoners should stay a few meters away or move further afield.

According to the company, the Bubatz card was programmed by a software developer from Koblenz. “The map was initially developed out of personal interest as no map existed at the time the bill was published and it was therefore difficult to assess what exactly a distance of (then) 250 meters would mean in practice,” it said . At some point there was a map for the whole of Germany “and it was published in Fediverse on the assumption that it might also be of interest to others.” Now everyone can view them publicly - and find out the right distance for the joint.
