A Kaufland shopping cart hanging dangerously from a parapet kept some people busy on Easter Sunday. What is the best way to react?
Apolda - An unusual incident occurred at the Kaufland branch in Apolda (Thuringia) at Easter. An alert woman discovered a shopping cart hanging over the parapet. But she obviously didn't really know what to do - and sought an assessment in a large Apolda Facebook group. She writes along with the photo: “Just discovered, at Kaufland, a shopping cart is hanging over the parapet over the sidewalk and is a danger. It is hanging over the sidewalk in front of Kaufland. Please take care if you walk there. Hope it doesn’t fall until Kaufland opens again.”

Woman discovers Kaufland shopping cart on footpath - and turns to Facebook group
She hopes that someone in contact with rescue workers will see the post: “Perhaps someone knows contacts (fire brigade, police, etc.) who could perhaps remove it.” The post speaks of a keen eye, but also great uncertainty, like the right one procedure is. The drama spreads to Facebook, because of course people there have – very different – opinions.
“Report it to the police, if something happens there will be a big fuss,” advises one. Some also - sometimes quite thoughtlessly - approach the discoverer: "And why don't you report it to the fire department or police and only post it afterwards?", "Going up and removing it yourself would be a quick solution" and "Does the volunteer fire department have to go out because of something like this?" ? Remove it yourself and you’re good,” they write. But on the one hand, the discoverer was noticeably unsure about how best to act. On the other hand, she couldn't go to the Kaufland parking deck herself on Easter Sunday. “You can’t get there when it’s closed,” she writes. That explains it. One user thinks: “But that doesn’t mean the volunteer fire department has to go out.”
Fire brigade goes to Kaufland – “There were a few gusts of wind”
Yes, she has to. Because in retrospect it turns out to be a good idea that the experts actually intervened after the short Facebook drama. Ingo Knobbe, city fire chief of the Apolda fire department, confirmed this to IPPEN.MEDIA. He refers to the unpleasant weather conditions on Easter Sunday. “There were a few gusts of wind on Sunday,” he remembers. And the Kaufland shopping cart was hanging directly above the pedestrian walkway. “He could have fallen down,” said Knobbe. And a lot could have happened!
The “happy ending” later spread on Facebook itself. A user posted a photo of an emergency vehicle there. Fire department chief Knobbe explains that a private person reported to the control center and they then went to Kaufland with three comrades. “It was done in five minutes: the turntable ladder was put up, taken down, done!” But that was only possible from the outside, emphasizes Knobbe. “Since the Kaufland was closed on Easter Sunday, no other access was possible, you couldn’t get it down via the parking deck, we solved it from the outside with the turntable ladder.” The emergency services even tidied up the shopping cart: “We parked it properly downstairs with the other shopping carts.” His conclusion: “Danger eliminated by the Apolda fire department.”

So in the end no one was hurt, and instead you can smile at the following Facebook comment about the shopping cart: “It’s bad”. The firefighters also saw the unusual photo of the shopping cart on the parapet - but only after the work was done. Knobbe: “It was an unusual deployment, but that’s what we’re there for.” Did you know that lying cones have an important meaning for the fire department and should NOT be put back up?
