Bed linen is one of the textiles that is often washed at 60 degrees to be on the safe side. Often wrongly, as experts say.

A look at the laundry list reveals more and more often: This bed linen can only be washed at 40 degrees. Many people wonder whether the covers of duvets, pillows or fitted sheets can actually be cleaned properly at low temperatures.

Wash bed linen: 30 or 40 degrees is usually sufficient

According to

the Federal Environment Agency

(UBA),

a washing temperature of 30 (for colored laundry) or 40 degrees (for white laundry) is usually sufficient for lightly to normally soiled bed linen. “With the 40 degree program, this brings about 35 to 40 percent energy savings compared to the 60 degree washing program,” says the UBA. Of course, this also applies to other items of laundry such as T-shirts, shirts and, in many cases, underpants.

To avoid germ growth in the washing machine, you should wash a load of laundry at 60 degrees at least once a month, using powdered heavy-duty detergent.

People who are allergic to mites should wash bed linen at 60 degrees

In certain cases it is still recommended to wash the bed linen at 60 degrees:

  • Heavily soiled bed linen

, for example with stubborn stains

  • After illnesses

, to reliably kill bacteria and viruses (such as an infection with corona viruses).

  • Mite allergy sufferers

, as the mites in bed only get to the collar at a temperature of 60 degrees.

However, please note that high washing temperatures can damage delicate materials such as satin. Allergy sufferers should therefore pay attention to insensitive materials in their bed linen. Stains can be pre-treated and possibly removed at lower temperatures.

How often to wash bed linen?

Opinions differ as to how often the bed linen needs to be changed and washed - after all, everyone has their own sense of hygiene. Experts recommend changing bed linen once a week, especially in summer when we sweat a lot. The same applies, among other things, to people with mite and pollen allergies when eating in bed or when animals sleep in bed. Otherwise, changing bed linen every three weeks is sufficient.

The duvet should also be put in the washing machine regularly, and pillows should also be washed every now and then.
