“I'm swapping these clothes for food”, “DVDs for a can of food”, “soft toys for a packet of cakes”… Last week, discussions on a Facebook barter group in Mayenne highlighted the difficulty of French people to feed themselves. “Now, 90% of exchanges are made for food, often infant milk,” estimated Élodie Goupil, administrator of this page, in our columns. “We are responding, unfortunately, to a real need.”
This type of publications is not limited to this group. Manon, administrator of “Eco-responsible Barter Zero Waste Rennes”, saw exchanges for food increase during Covid. “We see this type of request increase at the end of the month,” she explains, adding that many students in need barter to partially fill their fridge.
