More than 250 artists signed this Tuesday an open letter addressed to technology companies, developers and streaming platforms. They recognize that AI, when used intelligently, can foster creativity. Unfortunately, “some of the largest and most powerful companies are using our work to train AI models without permission,” they say. These efforts directly aim to replace the work of human artists with massive amounts of AI-created “sounds” and “images” that substantially dilute the royalties paid to artists.

The movement of revolt against artificial intelligence intensifies. After the Hollywood strikes, it's the music industry's turn to collectively express its discontent. More than 250 artists signed this Tuesday an open letter addressed to technology companies, developers and streaming platforms against generative artificial intelligence that uses their work without permission to train models that compete with them.

Among the signatories are Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, Elvis Costello, REM, Mumford & Sons, Katy Perry, Norah Jones, Nicki Minaj, Ja Rule, Jason Isbell and even Pearl Jam.

Almost all musical genres are represented. They are all members of the Artist Rights Alliance, an organization that defends the rights of artists "in the digital age". They recognize that AI, when used intelligently, can foster creativity. Unfortunately, “some of the largest and most powerful companies are using our work to train AI models without permission.

These efforts directly aim to replace the work of human artists with massive amounts of AI-created “sounds” and “images” that substantially dilute the royalties paid to artists. For many musicians, artists and songwriters just trying to make ends meet, this would be catastrophic.
