We are "concerned about the situation in the Middle East after the disastrous day of shame on 7 October, a day of shame, with attacks by Hamas against defenseless citizens, children, women and the elderly and then with Israel's reaction with very serious suffering for the population of Gaza. A condition that risks creating obstacles rather than facilitating Israel's security prospects and the possibility of building a Palestinian state, for which only the 'two peoples, two states' solution remains. This was stated by President Sergio Mattarella speaking from Abidjan , the first stop on his visit to Africa.
"The current international context - states Sergio Mattarella -, dramatically marked by the re-emergence of war impulses and threats to security, makes it appropriate to reflect on today's anniversary: 75 years ago, in fact, a group of countries concluded the Atlantic Treaty of the North. It was a real turning point, dictated by the determination to make peace secure, to create a space for collaboration and mutual assistance, to protect the irrepressible right to individual and collective self-defense. Today, with the return of war in European continent, the far-sightedness of that choice is fully understood".
