Thousands of supporters today accompanied the main Indian opposition leader, Rahul Gandhi, in the official presentation of his candidacy in the parliamentary elections which will begin on 19 April.
Gandhi is the son, grandson and great-grandson of former prime ministers, but he has already suffered two heavy defeats against Prime Minister Narendra Modi whose victory in these elections is also clearly expected. Today, Gandhi was enthusiastically welcomed in Wayanad, a town in the southern state of Kerala, where a large crowd gathered to celebrate his arrival.
"I do not think of you as my electorate, but as my family," Gandhi told his supporters, accompanied by his sister Priyanka and members of his party, the Indian National Congress. After the rally, the 53-year-old politician formally filed his candidature in Wayanad at the local election office.
Gandhi, Indira's grandson and Sonia's son, was first elected to this constituency in 2019, but was briefly expelled from Parliament last year after being found guilty of defamation in a lawsuit brought by a member of Gandhi's party.
