Horse racing world mourns the death of Sardinian jockey Stefano Cherchi. Cherchi, from Sassarese, originally from Mores, 23 years old, was hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the hospital in Canberra, Australia, where he arrived last March 20 following an accident suffered during a race at the Thoroughbred Park racecourse: while he was in the lead riding Hasime, Stefano Cherchi was the victim of a terrible fall, suffering serious head injuries. After two weeks of hospitalization in serious conditions, the emerging star of international horse racing died at 12.30pm Australian on Wednesday 3 April.
This was announced on X as the NSW Jockeys Association supports NSW jockeys and apprentices. The news is reported by the Australian media.
Considered a true talent, Stefano Cherchi moved to Newmarket, England, when he was just 16 years old. Raised under the aegis of the thoroughbred trainer Marco Botti, Oltremanica had achieved 106 victories and a wealth of acclaim and popularity, also thanks to his splendid character and his cheerfulness, as also demonstrated by the extraordinary wave of affection and solidarity that in these very difficult days it overwhelmed the family, well known and highly esteemed on the island. Having moved to Australia a few months ago, he had already achieved two successes and several important placings here too.
