The Democratic Union of the Center (UDC, populist right), the first party in Switzerland, is convinced that all the problems of the Alpine country derive from "uncontrolled" immigration and has presented a plan to be submitted to a popular referendum. The plan entitled: "No to a Switzerland with 10 million inhabitants" was presented at the federal chancellery in Bern, which has already received 114,600 signatures, out of the 100,000 required by law, collected in half the expected time.
Citizens will then be able to vote on the text, which also includes the denunciation of the agreement on the free movement of people with the European Union. A strong signal, in the midst of negotiations for a rapprochement between Switzerland and the EU, which the UDC strenuously opposes.
The party's website leaves no room for ambiguity.
"From the lack of safety, to daily traffic jams, to rising health insurance premiums, all of our problems are linked to uncontrolled mass immigration. There is a solution to this: the "Sustainability Initiative". referendum therefore proposes to amend the Constitution, establishing that "the permanent resident population of Switzerland must not exceed ten million people before 2050". "If the permanent resident population of Switzerland exceeds nine and a half million people before 2050", the government and the Parliament "will adopt measures, in particular with regard to asylum and family reunification, in order to guarantee compliance with the set limit value".
