At least 1,050 people have been injured due to the consequences of the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that hit Taiwan, with the death toll currently at 9 but with dozens missing and people stuck in underpasses or in isolated areas. The authorities say they are in contact with 101 isolated people, although at least 46 people are missing.
In Hualien, the most affected city, many residents spent the night outdoors because their homes were damaged or destroyed or for fear of nine tremors, which nevertheless recurred, including one of magnitude 4.5 in the very last few hours.
