. 120 overweight or obese adolescents and young adults (average age 17 years) took part in their study. The participants were divided into four groups and each morning they drank the following drinks on an empty stomach:

  • Group 1: 250 ml water with 5 ml apple cider vinegar

  • Group 2: 250 ml water with 10 ml apple cider vinegar

  • Group 3: 250 ml water with 15 ml apple cider vinegar

  • Group 4: placebo drink

The apple cider vinegar used contained five percent acid, while the placebo drink had 0.25 percent lactic acid added. This should be to mimic the taste of apple cider vinegar. The study was carried out double-blind: This means that neither the patient nor the investigator knows who is receiving which therapy.

The test subjects hardly differed in terms of their diet and physical activity during the study phase. They recorded this information in a food diary. In addition, weight, waist circumference and body fat percentage were measured at four different times (at the beginning of the study and after four, eight and twelve weeks). In addition, the researchers measured total cholesterol, blood sugar and triglyceride levels in the blood.
