"In order to prevent and combat the dramatic phenomenon of suicides within the prison population, I have signed a decree which provides for the assignment of 5 million euros to the prison administration for the current year for the strengthening of treatment and psychological services in institutes, through the involvement of specialized experts and professionals external to the administration". This was announced by the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio.
"The annual budget allocation for the purposes of preventing the suicide phenomenon and reducing the distress of prisoners has more than doubled, confirming - underlines Nordio - the government's commitment to promptly adopting the measures necessary to improve conditions detention in penitentiary institutions also in view of a more structured and long-lasting intervention to be proposed as a priority in the next budget law".
