Hashimoto's thyroiditis, or often called "Hashimoto" by those affected - after the Japanese doctor Hakaru Hashimoto - is a chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland triggered by the body's own immune system. The symptoms are often misinterpreted, meaning those affected have to live with the symptoms for up to years. Although Hashimoto's thyroiditis cannot be cured, it can be easily treated with hormone tablets. However, be careful about the side effects of thyroid medication with certain foods, such as coffee.

Although there are warning signs of developing hypothyroidism, patients often cannot interpret the symptoms with accompanying symptoms such as erectile dysfunction in men or depression due to thyroid disease and therefore cannot or only lately assess them by a doctor. In many cases, the inflammation of the thyroid causes little or no symptoms for a long time because hormones are still being produced. It is not uncommon for thyroiditis to be discovered accidentally during a medical examination, using palpation and ultrasound, and confirmed via blood, as the

Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's: The reason can be chronic inflammation years beforehand
Women are affected by Hashimoto's much more often than men, usually between the ages of 30 and 50. Thyroid inflammation often coincides with menopause, meaning Hashimoto's is easily overlooked or misdiagnosed. What is also important for a diagnosis is the patient's persistence with the doctor, to look and feel "more closely" and ultimately to use a blood test to check the crucial values of the thyroid antibodies and thyroid hormones: thyroidoperoxidase antibodies, TPO antibodies, TPO-AK , thyroglobulin antibodies, TgAK, TAK and TSH values.

Due to an undetected, gradual inflammation of the thyroid gland, hypothyroidism usually develops after years. If left untreated, chronic inflammation can lead to heart disease. In some cases, thyroid disease during pregnancy can even lead to miscarriages.
