Purchases are regularly shown on Reddit. Users discuss whether food is cheap or expensive in each country.
Munich – Many consumers are suffering from the ever-increasing prices for food. Whether fruit and vegetables or ready meals: many prices are significantly higher than they were a few months ago.
Food prices are rising – that’s how expensive it is to shop in Germany
In the “Europe” subreddit, users repeatedly post photos of their purchases. The users come from all corners of the world and show the community how much food they were able to buy for a certain amount. A Reddit user from Germany posted his photo there and showed what he had received for 55 euros at Kaufland - some of the other users were extremely surprised.
The Kaufland customer's picture showed finished products such as pizzas, yoghurts, milk and lots of fruit and vegetables. Meat loaf and minced meat also found their way into the shopping cart, which, according to the customer, were the most expensive products in the picture. In a very short time, the Reddit post received over 14,100 upvotes and more than 2,150 comments. The “Europe” community was divided about the purchase. However, they agreed on one thing: “I love these posts. It’s just cool to see what people in different countries can buy.”

The other users mainly discussed whether the prices for food are rather high or low compared to other countries. “We have the same prices here, but we only earn half as much,” stated a user from Slovenia. A user from Norway joked that he would probably only get one tomato for 55 euros. Users from Denmark, on the other hand, said that the prices in Germany weren't that low: "And I thought it would be expensive here."
The prices of many foods gradually increased, especially with the start of the war in Ukraine. Vegetables and dairy products in particular became more expensive, but some prices stabilized again. Some top comments felt that the Kaufland customer had spent a little too much on the food. But that is said to have been because he preferred branded products. “You would definitely have only paid half at Aldi or Lidl.” Another Reddit user was parked and looked for help. (
