The collection of signatures for the "Pane al Pane" petition was started in Turin by MEP Gianna Gancia. Presented to the European Parliament in July 2023, it aims to "clarify the denomination of bread in all European Union countries", with the aim of "distinguishing traditional bread, prepared with flours of vegetable origin, water, salt, leavening agents and food ingredients traditionally used before 15 May 1997, from variants that use unconventional ingredients, such as cricket powder" "We call things by their name - explained Gianna Gancia - Bread must be bread, meat must be meat, honey must be honey. Other products cannot be called as traditional ones. The "Pane al Pane" petition does not intend to limit innovation in the baking sector, but rather to ensure that citizens, as consumers, are informed about the composition of the products they purchase for themselves and their families".
The signature collection campaign will take place from April to June 2024; the petition and information material will be available on a dedicated website.
"The future of bread is much more than a food for us: it is a symbol of identity, history and tradition that continues to unite people and celebrate Italian culture. Signing the petition is important", concluded Gianna Gancia.
