Freshly baked baguette is a pleasure for all the senses. The scent, taste and unique texture make it an essential classic.

A piece of the warm baguette is broken off and the unmistakable smell of fresh bread that you have missed so much since your last vacation in Paris or Provence wafts towards you. The crispy crust breaks open easily and reveals an airy, fluffy interior. It's not just in France that the baguette is celebrated for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

There is a science behind the traditional baguette that, among other things, requires the dough to rise for hours. If you don't have that much time and are looking for a recipe without a lot of effort, you can still transform your kitchen into a small French bakery. The simple baguette can be made without any prior knowledge and only requires ingredients that you often already have at home. The Italian counterpart doesn't require any kneading, and the basic recipe for ciabatta is also a success.

These ingredients are needed for quick baguette:

  • 300 ml water, lukewarm

  • 2 tsp dry yeast

  • 1 tbsp honey

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 300 g wheat flour type 550

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

This is how you make French baguettes:

  • Pour warm water into a large bowl and briefly mix with dry yeast and honey. Let rest for ten minutes.

  • Add salt, then gradually fold in the flour and olive oil. Knead the dough again with your hands and shape it into a ball. Dust with a little flour and cover with a clean kitchen towel.

  • Let the baguette dough rise in a warm place for about an hour until doubled in size.

  • Preheat the oven to 240 °C hot air (alternatively 250 °C top/bottom heat).

  • Divide the dough into two portions on a floured work surface. Shape each piece into a rectangle with your hands and fold the top third of the dough toward the center. Repeat this step two more times.

  • Form the pieces of dough into two oblong baguettes with your hands and place them, seam side down, on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Cut several times with a sharp knife.

  • Place a baking dish filled with water on a baking rack on the lowest shelf in the oven. Place the baking tray with the baguette on the middle rack and bake the bread in the hot oven for about 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

The steam that rises from the baking dish creates the wonderful crust and the fluffy interior that defines every good baguette and takes bread lovers straight to France. If you want to use the homemade baguette as a snack, you can prepare a vegetarian tomato and mozzarella spread or colorful carrot and cream cheese balls during the baking process. They taste twice as good on a slice of bread that has been kneaded with a lot of love and dedication.
