"Our population has also been able to avoid the risk of 'collective psychosis' and the syndrome of 'social depression'". Cardinal Giuseppe Petrocchi said this in a passage of the homily of the Holy Mass celebrated in the church of the Anime Sante on the night of the 15th anniversary of the earthquake.
"It is known, in fact - he underlined - that the earthquake, in addition to causing geological 'swarms', also activates, in the souls of people, intense psychological and social vibrations: 'seismic' as well. Even the danger of slipping into 'trauma torpor' was defeated by L'Aquila's resilience and its tenacious planning audacity".
"The 2009 earthquake - said the archbishop in another passage - constitutes an 'observatory' on the tragedies of the world: the victims of that enormous misfortune are 'comrades in doom' of other subjects on whom the violence of conflicts and disruptive calamities has affected ".
"We painfully experience 'mourning' - he continued - which does not cease because it is sacred, but without being overwhelmed by it: the announcement of Easter, which we have received and welcomed, is better. If it is true, in fact, that 'everything passes', it is still truer, in Charity, that 'everything remains': in fact, authentic love is signed by 'forever'".
"The pain of 'detachment' from loved ones - he concluded - remains rooted in our soul: and will continue to burn in the heart, like a perennial lamp, fueled by a love that does not go out and awaits the moment of reunion".
