“People don’t understand what this type of brain injury can do to you,” Tina Onufer, victim of “Havana syndrome,” told the American channel CNBC in 2021. Migraines, dizziness, nausea, vision problems... All these symptoms have been described for several years by hundreds of American diplomats around the world, without the origin of this mysterious illness being found.
But according to an international media investigation published on April 1, these agents may have been the target of a sonic weapon used by the Russian secret services. The investigation shows that Russian spies were each time near the diplomats when they claimed to have been struck by Havana syndrome.
“A long-range ultrasonic device”
“A lot of hypotheses about these cases were considered initially,” says James Giordano, professor of neurology and biochemistry at Georgetown University (Washington) and scientific consultant during the first investigation into Havana syndrome in 2017.
“The possibility of exposure to a chemical, a microbe, a parasitic fungus… But all these hypotheses have been refuted. These symptoms could therefore have been caused by a long-range acoustic or ultrasonic device,” explains the professor.
American intelligence, for its part, has always officially considered it “very unlikely” that a foreign power or a weapon is at the origin of this strange disease. Watch our video at the top of the article.
