Disney+ will soon be taking action against sharing accounts. But it is not certain whether the streaming provider's new strategy will work.

Kassel – For many people in Germany, there is a good chance that a cozy evening on the couch will be accompanied by a film from a streaming provider. Streaming is becoming increasingly popular and in Germany alone, millions of people prefer to watch films and series online.

However, the providers also know this and try to make as much profit as possible with it. After Netflix took action against account sharing, Disney+ is now following suit and taking measures to prevent account sharing. It will therefore soon become more expensive for millions of users worldwide to continue streaming on Disney+.

Disney's first measures come in June: end of account sharing

What one streaming provider does is often adopted by the other providers. Netflix – the top dog among streaming providers – took measures against account sharing months ago. Even though this initially resulted in numerous angry Netflix customers and subscription cancellations, the measure increased the number of subscribers. Anyone who is not part of the household must create their own account - and will be asked to pay.

Disney+ is now planning to gradually crack down on password free riders, Disney boss Bob Iger told CNBC on

. In some countries this will begin in June. From September onwards, the sharing of passwords beyond one household will be prevented across the board. However, it is not certain whether Disney+ will also be successful with its approach. There's always the risk that disgruntled customers will switch to the competition, and Disney has received a lot of criticism in recent months - for example for the remake of Snow White.

Innovations at Disney+: The company faces challenges

Not the only reason why customers could jump ship, as prices were recently increased at Disney+. The Disney Group is therefore faced with the challenge of aligning itself with a profitable streaming business. To ensure this, further changes are planned. For example, the recommendations for films and series should be improved. To achieve this, many countries rely on local productions.
