The former vice president of Ecuador, Jorge Glas, 54, arrested during the night in a raid on the Mexican embassy where he had found refuge, was transferred to the maximum security prison La Roca, in Guayaquil. We read it in a note from the state penitentiary agency.
Glas, one of the strongmen of the progressive president Rafael Correa (2007-2017), has been in prison several times since the end of his mandate for convictions and corruption charges, which he denounced as political persecution.
The man is currently accused of embezzlement of public funds as part of an investigation into the reconstruction of the coastal province of Manabí, the hardest hit in the severe 2016 earthquake.
