Disney+ plans to stop sharing accounts. Millions of users worldwide will soon have to dig deeper into their pockets.

Munich – Streaming has long been part of everyday life for millions of people; users in Germany now prefer to watch films and series online. The providers are aware of this fact and try to make the greatest possible profit from it. After Netflix had already taken measures against account sharing, Disney+ is now following suit and trying to stop account sharing. This could make Disney+ more expensive to use for millions of users worldwide this year.

Disney+ is joining Netflix: account sharing will soon be stopped

The measures of a successful streaming service are often adopted by the other providers. Netflix, the market leader among streaming services, took action against account sharing a few months ago. Despite initial anger and subscription cancellations from Netflix customers, this measure was able to increase the number of subscribers. Anyone who is not part of the household must create their own account and pay for it.

Disney+ is now also planning to take gradual action against password sharing, as Disney boss Bob Iger told

CNBC

on Thursday . In some countries this will begin in June and from September sharing of passwords beyond one household will generally be prevented. However, it is uncertain whether Disney+ will be successful with this strategy. There is always the risk of disgruntled customers switching to the competition and Disney has received a lot of criticism in recent months, for example for its remake of Snow White.

Disney+ is taking action against account sharing – further changes are planned

Another reason customers might jump ship is the recent price increase on Disney+. The Disney Group is therefore faced with the challenge of making its streaming business profitable. To ensure this, further changes are planned. For example, the recommendation function for films and series is to be improved. In addition, many countries rely on local productions.
