Future-proof green: dry grass defies climate change and droughts

2024-04-07T13:14:56.051Z

Highlights: Dry grass is a special grass mixture that thrives even in high heat and on relatively dry soil. The grasses are more resilient and on the other hand, they have deeper roots. Poor grass is also suitable for very light and sandy soils that have difficulty retaining moisture. A disadvantage of dry grass is that the first green phase often takes significantly longer. The best time of year for this is spring in April and May or early autumn. In order for the seeds to develop well, the soil temperature should not fall below 12 °C.

Temperatures in Germany are rising, while groundwater levels are falling in many places. With a dry lawn you can prepare your garden for the future.

With climate change, gardening enthusiasts must also adapt to changing conditions. In addition, groundwater levels are falling in many regions, making water increasingly a valuable resource. If you are creating a new lawn, you should therefore consider a so-called dry lawn, semi-dry lawn or poor grass lawn. We explain what makes this type of lawn special, how you can create a dry lawn and maintain it properly.

Dry grass – the ecological alternative?

Dry grass (promotional link) is a special grass mixture that thrives even in high heat and on relatively dry soil. On the one hand, the grasses are more resilient and on the other hand, they have deeper roots. Poor grass is also suitable for very light and sandy soils that have difficulty retaining moisture. You can also, of course, use a dry lawn if you don't want to water so much in the summer - it's not for nothing that companies often offer these seeds under the name "water-saving lawn". This saves you time and money and at the same time protects the groundwater level in your region.

And that's not the only reason why dry grass is a sustainable alternative to conventional lawn mixtures. Because sometimes you forego extensive soil improvements, which on some soils are only of use for a limited time. Dry lawn even makes a contribution to environmental protection.

Dry grass: You should know these disadvantages

A disadvantage of dry grass is that the first green phase often takes significantly longer. In addition, the seeds can dry out just as easily during the germination phase as with conventional lawn. Only when the particularly deep roots have developed after about a month can the dry grass show its advantage. And until then, you have to water it just as diligently as you would a normal lawn.

In addition, the look of a dry lawn is a little different from a conventional ornamental lawn. The grasses are a little looser together and are usually a little wider. The lawn exudes a slightly Mediterranean atmosphere. This difference is hardly noticeable - but if you value particularly lush and dense green, you should not choose dry lawn.

This is how you create a dry lawn professionally

You create a dry lawn in the same way as any conventional lawn. The best time of year for this is spring in April and May or early autumn. In order for the seeds to develop well, the soil temperature should not fall below 12 °C, even at night. Even if you have a dry lawn, it is best to dig up and scarify the soil beforehand. If the soil is sufficiently loose and fertilized, you can sow and press the seeds. Then water the area thoroughly and keep it moist throughout the first month.

How to care for your dry lawn

A dry lawn is a little more undemanding than normal lawn, but otherwise the care does not differ much from conventional lawns. It is best to keep the following points in mind:

  • Never cut dry grass shorter than four centimeters.

  • Mow particularly regularly to prevent thatch and soil compaction.

  • In very dry periods, even dry lawns need to be watered.

  • It is best to fertilize with organic lawn fertilizer in spring and summer.

  • Give the lawn a one-off boost in the fall with a potassium-rich fall lawn fertilizer.

  • Re-sow after very hot summers or cold winters.
