The economic slowdown in Italy in 2023 also affected the remittances of immigrants abroad which, according to what can be seen from the Bank of Italy tables, saw stagnation (-0.4%) after the growth of the year previous.
In detail, foreign citizens sent 8.1 billion euros to their countries of origin compared to 8.2 in 2022. In the fourth quarter, in line with the slowdown in GDP, remittances fell by 2.4%. The top three countries receiving remittances in 2023 were Bangladesh, Pakistan and the Philippines, which received 14.3, 8.3 and 7.3% of the flow respectively.
