Accidentally a hit: The delicious French dessert was born out of the Tatin sisters' mishap and still delights cake lovers worldwide today.
Ah, France! Land of love, fashion and of course incomparable food. Hardly any other cuisine in the world enjoys such a legendary reputation and anyone who has ever tasted French cooking knows why. But which classics of French cuisine should you definitely know and try out for yourself?
A delight for connoisseurs: onion soup, crepes, baguette and beurre blanc
It starts with the hearty onion soup, which offers the perfect start to an enjoyable meal with caramelized onions, crispy bread and melted cheese. Crêpes, wafer-thin pancakes that can be filled with either sweet or savory fillings, are another must-have in French cuisine. Whether with Nutella and banana or ham and cheese, crepes always taste good.
Of course, the baguette is also indispensable, a crusty white bread that goes well with every meal. Whether enjoyed on its own, spread with butter or as a basis for sandwiches, the baguette is a true all-rounder. The French taste experience is rounded off with a delicious basic sauce, beurre blanc, refined with white wine and butter - the perfect accompaniment to fish and vegetables.
Tarte Tatin: a heavenly dessert with caramelized apples
But France has much more to offer than hearty dishes. A heavenly dessert is the Tarte Tatin, an upside-down apple pie with caramelized apples and a buttery shortcrust pastry. A classic that is now being brought into focus again by the VOX program “Kitchen Impossible”. Because here, professional chefs dare to try this French masterpiece - and Simply Tasty shows how the sweet Tarte Tatin can also be made at home.
For the classic French dessert Tarte Tatin you need the following ingredients:
225g flour
225g butter
225g sugar
1.5 kg apples (e.g. Golden Delicious)
1 vanilla bean
The French apple pie is a success thanks to these step-by-step instructions:
Make a shortcrust pastry from flour, 150 grams of cold butter and 75 grams of sugar. Form the dough into a ball, wrap it in cling film and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
Peel, halve and core the apples.
Preheat oven to 180 °C fan oven.
Melt 150 grams of sugar in an ovenproof pan. Add the remaining butter (75 grams) and the pulp of a scraped vanilla pod. Simmer for about a minute until a golden caramel is formed. Remove from heat.
Place apple pieces close together on the caramel so that the pan is completely covered with apples. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
Roll out the shortcrust pastry on a lightly floured work surface to the size of a pan and place it on top of the pre-baked apples. Press the ends onto the edge of the pan and prick the dough several times with a fork.
Bake for another 20 minutes.
Allow to cool briefly, then turn the Tarte Tatin onto a plate and cut into pieces.
Easy Tasty Tip:
The French apple tart tastes best lukewarm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
