Book adaptations are controversial. Some people love it, others are often disappointed because the film or series cannot live up to the expectations that the literary work had raised. It is not uncommon for even book authors to distance themselves from the films, as is the case with the well-known Eberhofer crime novels. In 2024, some books will again be made into films and brought to cinema screens or streaming services. This article will introduce you to four exciting film adaptations that you can look forward to in 2024.
Patricia Highsmith's Ripley novels are coming to Netflix
The American writer Patricia Highsmith, who died in 1995, thrilled people with her five novels about the conman Tom Ripley, which were read over a million times in Germany alone. Ripley's stories, set in Italy in the 1960s, will be featured in an eight-part mini-series on Netflix. The main role is played by Andrew Scott, who fans love for his role in the hit series “Sherlock”, among other things. “Ripley” premieres on Netflix on April 4, 2024.

“Marian Trench” by Jasmin Schreiber is coming to cinemas
In 2020, “Marianengraben”, a novel by best-selling author Jasmin Schreiber, who also published “Endling” and “Der Mauersegler” was published. In a mixture of drama and comedy, young Paula (Luna Wedler) develops an unusual friendship with an older man named Helmut (Edgar Selge) after a dramatic stroke of fate. Together they undertake a more than unusual journey. The exact release date in cinemas has not yet been announced, but it is certain that fans can expect it in 2024.
Paula doesn't need much to live: her apartment, a little money for food and her little brother Tim, whom she loves more than anything in the world. But then a terrible accident happens that plunges her into a deep depression. Only the encounter with Helmut, a quirky old gentleman, awakens the will to live in her again. And finally, Paula and Helmut embark on an adventurous journey that brings them both back to themselves - in one way or another.

With Adam Sandler: Netflix releases “Spaceman of Bohemia” by Jaroslav Kalfar
US superstar Adam Sandler returns to the streaming platform Netflix with a new project. The film “Spaceman”, based on the novel “Spaceman of Bohemia” by Jaroslav Kalfar, will be shown there on March 1, 2024. In it, Sandler takes on the role of the Czech astronaut Jakub Procházka, who climbs into the first Czech spaceship of all time and quickly has to struggle with loneliness and a scary “roommate” in space.
April 2018: The JanHus 1, the first spacecraft in Czech history, rises into the sky. An entire nation is on its feet to watch the start from the state-owned potato field. The crew consists of a single astronaut: Jakub Procházka, scion of a family of collaborators and professor of astrophysics with relevant experience in the study of interstellar dust. However, after thirteen monotonous weeks in space, Jakub's desire to explore has almost expired. The only bright spot are the weekly video chats with his wife Lenka. But when she leaves him, Jakub's life in orbit goes into trouble. And as if that wasn't enough, a furry, eight-legged roommate sneaks into Jakub's spaceship. Jaroslav Kalfař's debut is crazy and full of exuberant imagination, yet romantic and a little philosophical.

Moving war film “My War Gone By, I Miss It So” opens in cinemas
If you are interested in stories based on true events, the film “My War Gone By, I Miss It So” with superstar Tom Hardy could be interesting and captivating at the same time. The film is based on the biography of the journalist and soldier Anthony Loyd, who reports on his terrible experiences in the Bosnian War (1992 to 1995). More for fans of dark stories, but absolutely captivating and worth seeing.
