During an interview alongside Charlotte Rampling for
Madame Figaro
magazine , on newsstands on April 19, Charlotte Gainsbourg made a strong statement about the place held by her deceased loved ones.
“I have three absentees. My sister Kate, my father, my mother. The entire first part of my childhood, until I was 9 years old, there were four of us. Today, among these four, I am the last. It's very strange. I have an inner life with them. I'm not a believer or anything, but my deaths are part of me,” declared the 52-year-old actress. A statement to which Charlotte Rampling responded: “You have to find your way through all of this. This suffering forces you. Or to sink or to rise.” To which Serge Gainsbourg’s daughter added: “To make something emerge.”
3 deaths
Charlotte Gainsbourg's existence was marred by these disappearances, all of which were widely reported in the media. In 1991, the actress, then aged 20, lost her father, Serge Gainsbourg, following a heart attack. 20 years later, in 2013, the actress and singer also had to deal with the death of her half-sister Kate Barry, who died tragically in Paris, falling from the 4th floor of her Parisian apartment at the age of 46.
Since then, 10 years have passed. In July 2023, she must face a third shock with the death of her mother Jane Birkin, following a stroke. During the funeral on July 24, Charlotte Gainsbourg delivered a speech with a lump in her throat that moved fans around the world: “I find myself an orphan, I see all your souls in pain without her. I can already see the void she leaves us. She’s my mom, she’s our mom.”
