(CNN) - It is one of the worst nightmares of beach lovers: return to your place, soaked, to discover that your belongings, including your clothes, were stolen.

To help cope with such shame on the beach, Barcelona police have been delivering emergency clothing kits to bathers who were victims of theft while enjoying the city's coasts.

Police have been preventing crime by patrolling the beaches on ATVs, skateboards, boats, vehicles and on foot.

La Guàrdia Urbana de Barcelona told CNN that more than 174 “support packages”, which contain a t-shirt, flip flops, pants and even a subway card, have been handed over to victims of robbery on the city's 10 beaches this summer .

The Catalan city has a series of beaches that are especially busy during the summer months, including several nudist areas.

But in addition to attracting millions of tourists every year, the beaches of Barcelona can also attract thieves and criminals.

City police told CNN that on average there are three robberies per day in the city, which, according to Reuters, receives about 30 million visitors each year.

As part of attempts to keep crime at bay, city officials from Guàrdia Urbana have been patrolling their beaches using scooters, beach ATVs, vehicles, boats, and even on foot, in an initiative to prevent crime and improve surveillance of the area during the busy mid-year period, which runs from May to September.

City police have also intensified their efforts to control swimming in dangerous areas, the sale of unlicensed food and beverages and misdemeanors and robberies.
