(CNN) - Former baseball player David Ortiz hired Ed Davis, a former Boston Police Commissioner, to investigate the shooting at a Dominican nightclub in June, according to a statement from the spokesman for the former Chicago Red Sox player.

Ortiz hired Davis a few weeks after he returned to Boston from the Dominican Republic, according to the statement.

"The Edward Davis Company is monitoring and analyzing information from various sources in the Dominican Republic regarding the reasons for the shooting of David Ortiz on June 9," he said. "The Edward Davis company also provides personal security services for David Ortiz and his family."

Why David Ortiz is loved beyond the world of baseball (and how he got the nickname Big Papi)

Davis served as a police commissioner from 2006 to 2013, overseeing the department during the investigation into the Boston marathon attack. He now runs a security company and is an analyst at WBZ, an affiliate of CNN.

An armed man shot Ortiz in the back while sitting in a crowded courtyard at Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic.

The bullet pierced the lower part of his back, pierced his intestines and lower organs before injuring his friend, the television character Jhoel López, in the leg.

Lopez was the real target, not the MLB star, authorities said. Víctor Hugo Gómez, accused of orchestrating the failed coup for $ 30,000, has been arrested, along with several other suspects.

After surgery in the Dominican Republic, Ortiz was flown to Boston, where he underwent additional procedures. He left intensive care on June 22, almost two weeks after being shot.

The Massachusetts General Hospital released Ortiz last month. Big Papi called his doctors, nurses and caregivers "some of the best teammates I've had."

This Sunday, the Red Sox legend published his first photos since he was shot. He was helping his daughter, Alex, move to the Berklee College of Music during his first year.

Ortiz spent 14 years with the Red Sox, helping them win three World Series. It ranks at number 17 on the list of homer leaders of all time, with 541.
